I love dresses. I got a very nice black one form the 90's-ish today at the thift store, as well as a tribal print cropped vest and some awesome red/black acid wash high waisted jeans that I am cutting into shorts! How exciting is that?
This is one of my dear friends, a rose floral dress. It is from the thrift store. Sweater was from a theater sale, scarf- H&M, and shoes UO.

Today was very nice but I feel quite tired. I am making a chair out of cardboard for a project that a very nice art teacher invited me to come and do wither her AP art class. It is quite fun. And guess what? I met some nice people todays at school.
Now I am going to take a steamy shower.

A weekend full of adventures

This weekend has been interesting. Yesterday I got to work from life for 6 hours (which was awesome, but sadly the results of my labor was not so amazing). Then I headed downtown and went to an independent film with some dear friends of mine. Until yesterday I had never walked out of a movie. Let me just say that 'My Winnipeg' is not enjoyable. Just pretend that you are somewhat perverted surrealist artist who likes symbolism (doesn't sound bad yet, but listen to this) who is very sick and delirious and so is having one of those horrible sick dreams in black and white with monotone voice repeating itself over and over again. The movie put me to sleep, as well as made me feel sick, all at once. Not something I pay for. In fact, there are people who receive large amounts of money to cure those who are sick and delirious (called doctors).
After that we went galavanting about the city and watched the beautiful sky change colors as the sun set... and it was cold! We met people who my friend knew and they dropped a pumpkin off a bridge and it exploded! Then I went home because it was cold and dark.
Anyways, sorry for the lack if imagery. My camera is still in its grave. However I am going to get some rolls of film developed this week. Until then, here are some stale morsels that you might enjoy. And thank you for your sweet comments!

I wore this a while ago. The dress was an old night gown that I changed the bottom on. My dad told me it looked like a curtain dress that the designer had left unfinished. Oh well, I like it. Boots are UO.
I just love this image form Lookbook. I could spend ages in that wonderland!

Now off to watch 'A roman Holiday'.

Sorry for the great lack of post. I have been out of town, had relatives over, and then had to catch up on school work. Now that things are getting back to the normal schedule I hope to not desert my blog as much as I have in the past few weeks.

Hello my dear people! my sad camera lost one of it's pars and so I cant take pictures with it anymore! I still have my wonderful film camera, but it isn't really perfect for taking outfit shots. Anyways, I have decide that it is about time to get a new digital, one that really takes amazing pictures, it is just that at the mont I am a bit short of money, so it may be a while. During that time I am going to be posting images form film, older digital photos, and also about fashion history and art. If you have anything you would specifically like to hear about or a suggestions on what camera I should look at then let me know!

A brief history of youth subculture over the past half decade part one

Lately I have been taking a lot of inspiration from the various youth subcultures from the past 60 years or so. These would induce the beatniks, hippies, punks, goths, the whole vintage wave (which has, believe it or not, been going on for the past half decade) and anti-fashion. So I have decided to share what I have found out about these groups, which, despite the fact that I feel lacks much, still contains a good bit of material. The next paragraph of information on Beats and Beatniks is from the book "Thrift Score" by Al Hoff. It is an enjoyable book that I recommend.
The Beats and Beatniks
It was during the 50's when the media first became obsessed with youth subculture. The masses of youth at the time all decided that to be cool one had to be unique, and so they all decided to look like the Beats, a group of slovenly starving artists. of course, they all ended up looking the same, which resulted in the teen subculture of Beatniks (a subculture that the media embraced). This style can be summed up by shaggy nonchalant-ness. The boys would wear black sunglasses and turtlenecks, overcoats, striped boater t's, jeans, berets, shorts, sandals, etc. Th girls would wear black tights amd dresses topped with large bronze jewelry or black leotards, thrifted dresses, and ballet slippers. This is a look that is still imitated today.... it is called grunge.

Two of the artists who were the originators of the whole beat look. From right to left- Kerouac, Ginsberg, and another man who was also had the look (Scot someone)

The black dress with bronze accessories look

The styles of youth reflect, I believe, some of there main beliefs, whether they want it to or not. During the past century individualism has become more important than beauty and the traditions of hundreds of years have been upturned (over all this has had many positiva, as well as negative, results). Most of the subcultures of fashion over the past half decade have embraced trends such as wearing old, dirty things that are obviously not fashionable, beautiful, or tasteful (all in the name of individualism). This underlying desire to be individual above all else has redefined our culture in so many more ways than what is socially acceptable to wear. Pleas don't think that I am saying that this is a completely good or bad thing. As an artist I am very classical, and my belief in God and morals is often labeled as old fashioned. However, I do not see any contradiction with that and pushing the boundaries in what I wear (in comparison with the people of my city) and living a bohemian lifestyle. In fact, as an individual created in God's image, there is every reason to be who you in God, as he created you. So, I am not sure what the underlying point I am trying to make in this rant is.....Sorry... I guess it is just seeking who you are as an individual make sure you dot fall into one of the specific groups of people all trying to be different in the same way (I know that is impossible, but just don't go wearing things and believing things just because so and so did).

School...

I might have already said this, but school not as bad as i thought! I still have tome to live my life - read books and magazines, picnic in the park, and work on my beloved art. At the moment I actually have been doing so much of the above as to leave myself little time for assembling intricate and intelligent posts (not to mention attempting to get decent outfit shots) so please be patient.

This was Saturday evening when I went to the park with friends-

Earphones

I received the most amazing pair of earphones in the mail a few days ago. They make the experience of listening to music far more wonderful than I was aware it could be (music from an iPod, not live), plus they are a very happy color.

Last night I ended not being able to sleep for a while, so instead i though up a project to do today...... bleach splashed jeans! They turned out quite nicely and will have there debut tomorrow. I also read some in the very exciting book 'Thrift score' and was very inspired to-
a) Do more research on the teen subcultures of the past half decade (beatnik, punk, ska, hippy, etc)
b) work more of these elements into my style
More on that tomorrow when I have some time to post in detail.

Saturday the local theater had a costume sale. I was there 10 minutes after it opened and got a HUGE bag full of amazing vintage dresses, tops, vintage and 80's undergarments, hats, etc for $40. Now I am basically set except for a few things. My wish list is now quite diminished! I managed to find a pair of shinny turquoise 80's legging for a dollar! Joy!
Any way, all I am planning to get now are some random Ceslete Stine tights, retro headphones, two tone AA tights, and some brown leather loafers from UO. That is basically all I will be able to afford for this upcoming season any way. I really have come to be such a spendthrift when it comes to clothes, but I guess that is good if I am planning to spend the rest of my life as a starving artist.

Hay Bales

I have always loved hay bales. there is something so magical about them. If this doesn't make sense to you then that probably indicates that you are sane. Maybe part of the reason I like them so much is that my uncle, who is an amazing photographer, did all this photos of hay bales using lights at night and the pictures have always hung in my grandmothers house.

So, anyways, enough about hay bales.

Thanks to my 12 year old brother for taking the pictures. He is such a sweetie.

Goals, Beliefs, and Sculptures

I got invited last minute to a 3-day-long sculpting class with a model and, of course, couldn't say no. So the past three days I have been busy.
Meanwhile, here are some random pictures.
I got a comment on my last post about not writing about my pro-life efforts and I would like to say thank you for reading my blog and for the advice, however I would also like to say:
Firstly - when I began this blog I did not view it as a fashion blog, but instead a blog where I can write about my artistic endeavors, what is inspiring me, what I find beautiful, ugly, etc. Right now in my life, I am expressing myself a lot in the way I dress, as I always have. But attire is not the main focus of this blog, only a subpoint). The way I view my blog has not changed. The only recent change is the amount of time I have devoted to it. Of late I have only had time to post a few outfit pictures and have not been focusing as much on art, religious beliefs and important aspects of my life.
Secondly - when I do mention what I believe and the causes I support, I do not mean to offend anyone. I mention what is going on in my life and what is weighing heavily on my mind, and the past week that has been what I can do to slow down abortion.
This week I am going to work on a bas relief of a pregnant woman. Yes, it is connected with my desire to shield tiny children in the womb.
I can't separate my life into little boxes labeled 'fashion,' 'art,' 'photography,' 'religion,' 'what I stand for' and so on. I believe that every aspect of our life is connected and influences every other part of our life. I want to live a life in which I stand for what I believe unashamedly and not be afraid of what people think of me for expressing myself. I hope that you will respect me for this, despite the fact that you my not agree with me about boys and girls before birth. If you cannot respect me because of what I believe, than I hope that you can lay this difference aside and enjoy the art and images on this blog. Please don't hate; it does not become anybody.
Thank you
- Marie

Red Dress

dress- thrifted at Thriftko in Orlando

Wore this on Sunday. I am not big on red but I really do like this dress.... and it looks nice worn backward also!
Not much going on. I've been working a lot on purging/ reorganizing my room. It is a major job. This morning I went to a protest/press conference about abortion, which went really well. A lot more work is going to have to happen though to keep this clinic from coming to town.

1.8.08

Of late so much has been inspiring me. Musically, at the moment I greatly enjoy listening to the kooks (above) and, of course, the Beatles. Art is also a great inspiration, as well as the multitude of color that surrounds me in this beautiful world.
So, anyway, about art (the paint clay kind, not the musical kind). As I was looking through a book on modern art, a couple thoughts passed through my mind, namely:
- There are so many artists
- The majority of artists over the past century have done a fairly successful job of butchering fine art and replacing it with emotional scribbles and blobs
- These artists raised timeless to the position to define what is beautiful and what is “good” art (as opposed to the Renaissance, when God's creation was the ultimate definition of beauty). Nihilism, one of the leading beliefs of the past century, leads to total depression. Many artists drown in this hopeless darkness, a darkness that they made for themselves by removing a beautiful and merciful God from their world. If there is no God, then we loose the definition of wright and wrong, and then we lose all the motivation we should have to do good, perservere through hard times, and to create.
All this is to say that it seems that many of the artists of the past century lived unhappy lives that they ended themselves. Of course, artists are rather crazy by nature. But with a nihilistic viewpoint, their brilliant creativity that could have produced breathtaking works of art (like the works of masters such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, the Pre-Raphaelites, etc) now produces blobs of spatter paint. No wonder they are so depressed. Who wouldn't rather create something with meaning than a pointless mess?
Another matter to ponder is that, for some reason, modern artists have the notion that “good art” is something that is unlike any other piece of art ever created. Now, if that is how you define good art, you are going to have people calling blank sheets of paper and urinals art. There simply are a limited number of art genres, a limited number of styles. There are only so many new ways to create art, and, in my opinion, if “uniqueness” has now become more important than beauty, talent, and technique, we are a very lost and hopeless people.
Now don't take me wrong, I do value individuality, but in its place.
Even though in general the art of the past century is something that I do not love greatly, there are exceptions. There are artist that have created works that could stand on there own next to any Renaissance master, as well as more crazy artists, like Dali, who, despite there weird modernism, have always stuck a chord in me. Here are a few beauties.

• Camille Claudel was Rodin’s student, model, and lover (Why did so many of the most amazing artist lead such immoral lives?)
Here is a sculpture she did called La Valse.

Loves Song by Giorgio de Chirico

I have a list of paintings I would like to post for your enjoyment, as well as some pictures of my latest work, but I am posting this from a friend's computer. I have spent the most wonderful week at her house, resting and doing absolutely nothing the majority of the time. However I hope to get some nice pictures of the past few weeks developed soon. Thank you for you patience and comments.
